When you have a painting project, it is not always best to do it yourself — and, if you don’t have the time to take on such a project, it is usually better to get someone else to do it for you.
Of course, there are so many professional painting contractors out there, and not all of them are going to be right for you.
Being insured and licensed just isn’t optional when it comes to being a professional painting contractor, or at least one that you would want to hire for your painting project.
When a painting contractor is insured, you know that you are covered if anything were to happen on the site or if there was some kind of an accident otherwise.
Being licensed means that you know that the professional painting contractor you are hiring is knowledgeable about what they are doing and can be depended on to get the job done.
A professional painting contractor that is worth hiring will be able to easily hand out a few references — people that had previously used their services and then were sufficiently pleased that they would want to recommend them.
Having the references is excellent, but if you don’t take advantage of them, they’re not worth much — reach out to the people and ask them what they thought of the job they got and why they liked it.
The best way to know that you are getting a reasonable price for what you are trying to get done is to take the same list of requirements (or requests) and to take them to a few different professional painting contractors.
The requests must be the same so that you know that you will be getting the same service, just for possibly a better price from one of them.
As much as we want to believe that the word that people give us is sacrosanct and that there’s no way that a person would tell us one thing and then actually do another when it comes to professional paintwork you need to get everything related to costs in writing and not just spoken.
A contractor could conceivably tell you over the phone that the cost of an interior painting job would cost a certain amount of money and you would believe that it was the case that it would cost that much only to get a shock upon getting the final bill, with fees that had been previously unmentioned suddenly making an appearance.
Do yourself a favor and make sure that you know exactly what you’re getting by putting everything in writing so you have what to refer to if any questions should surface.
One of the biggest costs in any given painting project is the cost of the paint, and it’s not always clear when you’re looking at a budget for such a project if that cost is included.
The best thing to do is to agree beforehand whether that cost will be included in the price of the painting project.
The unpleasant revelation after the fact that paint was not included in the estimate (and therefore the much higher cost of the project after it is completed) is not worth the little time that it takes to ask if it is part of the estimate.
